Origin of Easter

The exact origin of Easter is unknown, but the several theories are available related to the origination of Easter. It has been a pagan festival that observed the advent of the spring season after the desolate of months of winter. A 7th century, Anglo-Saxon cleric claimed that word Easter came from the Eastre or Eostre, who was a Teutonic goddess of spring & fertility. As per the belief, ancient Romans used to offer their first produce to the deity of spring.

Another record says that the Christian church converted the festival of pagan from an observance of the season of spring to the one that commemorated to celebrate the resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ. In 325 AD, the date for the occasion of Easter was also changed by the church. Thereafter, the festive was not observed on the spring equinox, but it celebrated on the very first Sunday following the first moon or after the vernal equinox. And since then Easter is celebrated on 22nd March every year in some parts of the world. The date can be as late as 25th April too.

Some version also relates Easter to the Jewish festival called Passover. While, in Spain and France it is known as Pascua and Paques which is derived from the Latin word for Passover, Pascha. For the Christians, Easter is all about an entire season as opposed to the single day celebration.  The season starts with Lent during which Christians maintain fast for a whole day and spend time in prayer, penance, and self-reflection as well.
